March 7 2005 -- Punch Out Volume One

A growing trend in American business is to take a sucessful idea from a competitor and come out with your own cheap knockoff in hopes of seizing a portion of the profits. We've all seen it. Sometimes it is better than the original, sometimes, it flops miserably. This new review format is dedicated to separating the crappy knockoffs from the big league products so you dont have to try em all. First up, The Steak Egg and Cheese breakfast sandwiches from McDonalds and Dunkin Donuts.

Sounds glorious, what does it look like?

The first thing that caught my eye when taking the sandwich out of the wrapper is the aura like glistening the entire thing had. The thing basically looked like it had been dipped in melted butter before being served to me. The size is more then adequate and the steak looks much more hearty then I had figured.

In this picture you can truly see the extent of the grease that this sandwich packs. At this point I flashed back to when I watched "Supersize Me" and I almost vomited. I couldnt believe I was actually going to eat this thing. It wasnt until half way through that I began to see the genious of this concept. Cheesesteaks have been an American favorite for decades, as have breakfast sandwiches. The hybrid of these two staples is indeed a wonderfully tasting creation. The McDonalds version is near perfectly executed from the suprisingly good toasted bagel to the equally suprising steak portion. Unfortunately, the THIRTY ONE grams of fat and the TWO-HUNDRED AND SIXTY FIVE! milligrams of cholesterol made my chest wince in pain.

Based on taste alone, 5 out of 5 cheeses.

Based on the fact that I ingested 88% of my daily value of cholesterol in one sitting 5 out of 5 moldy cheeses.

Dunkin Donuts Steak Egg and Cheese Bagel

(from beef.org)

Description: The Dunkin’ Donuts Steak, Egg and Cheese sandwich is made with a sandwich-style, marinated steak patty – a mix of chuck, round and sirloin – served with an egg and slice of American cheese on a freshly baked bagel.

Not as catchy as the 'Donalds one but it was the only one i could find.

Doesnt sound all to glorious, what does it look like?

Upon opening the wrapper, I noticed that the entire sandwich had less girth. The amount of steak on this particular sandwich is somewhat lacking. Also lacking was the gallon of grease evident on the 'Donalds version (I guess thats a good thing).

A look inside shows how truly modular this sandwich is. It doesnt really look like it was made when I ordered it. It reminds me more of a frozen pre-packaged sandwich (see previous griddlecake review). Tastewise, its somewhat lacking. You pretty much HAVE to put ketchup on it or its pretty bland. I found myself actually missing the greasy mess I ate earlier. In fact, this sandwich is not really all too much healthier either. The future Mrs Dackermann gave me a little help explaining the taste, and I feel she hit the nail on the head. She took one bite and said, "The meat kinda tastes like the patties they used to try to pass off as hamburgers in high school". I think I'll leave it at that.

Overall 3 out of 5 cheeses for the effort.
