November 7 2005 -- No White Power Here... So again we have gone to White Castle in the effort to find the next great crave, something to at least equal the greatness that is the White Castle cheeseburger. Something to get besides that magical tiny little holed square of a god made flesh, something new and exciting. Well, once again White Castle has tried something new and we were there to eat it. The Honey Chipolte Chicken Sandwich.

This review is a tale of two stories. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness. . . . and we lived to tell the tale.

Much like good old Chuck Dickens wrote in that quote, things did indeed begin with the best of times. There I was, Halloween afternoon, driving home to dress up and greet all the little kiddes in their costumes. It would be my lady pal, my parents, brother, and eventually other family members. Since they would be hosting I decided I should bring something along as an offering. Being an NJ native I got something that many of us hold dear, White Castle cheeseburgers. On my way home I stopped by one of the fine White Castle establishments and went through the drive through, and that's where I saw it. A big sign next to the menu for their new sandwich. The Honey Chipolte Chicken Sandwich. It had a big old "NEW!" right next to it and my emotions were thrown into a tizzy. To get it, or not to get it, that wasn't even a question. That "NEW!" had only one meaning to people of my caliber, BUY ME!. So I did. And here it is.

Just look at that thing. It's drenched in sauce and looks glorious, filled with calories, fat, and who knows what else. All that means is.. FULL OF FLAVOR! It really was the best of times. I would be seeing a girl in a few hours who sort of likes me and in my lap I had White Castle. I was sure to call up all my friends and co-workers and let them know that the White Caslte Honey Chipolte Chicken Sandwich was a wonderful thing.

But like someone else once said, all good things come to an end.

That end came during a fateful IM conversation with PatBoyX a couple of days later. It went something like this:

PatBoyX: Hey, I got that chicken thing at White Castle.
Me: How was it?
PatBoyX: It sucked.

And things went downhill from there. A few days later, last Wednesday to be exact, I went and tried it again. This time with a lady. Was it really as bad as the PatBoy had told us? Was it not the magical piece of chicken that I thought it was? I guess I was going to find out.

Sitting in Lincoln Tunnel traffic for about a half hour we arrived at the White Castle after dark, ready for our meals. The order consisted of 17 cheeseburgers, a couple of Cokes, and 3 White Castle Honey Chipolte Chicken sandwiches. I had high hopes for them. Perhaps PatBoy was right, or, perhaps he has bad taste and the chicken really was as amazing as I had first thought.

So we drove back off into the darkness of Clifton. The sun had gone down so it was pretty hard to see, as well. (Hmmm...) I was handed a chicken sandwich. I took it out of its little box. I felt it's weight. I smelled it. And then, I tasted it.

My world was shattered.

The flavor I had experienced before was all gone. There was nothing but a small breaded piece of chicken. Sure, there was a little bit of sauce on there but not enough to be worth anything over 2 cheeses. The dream had ended. There was no new Crave at the Castle. It was all lies to get me to go back for more. It truly was the worst of times and I was foolish enough to buy this thing a second time.

2 cheeses. Don't bother.
