Ryan lives a life that none of us could even imagine. Not only does he live famously in the 78west.com poll that I have over on the left sidebar but in reality he is almost ready for Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. While I fight the morning traffic and slave away at a desk job somewhere in the middle of New Jersey, Ryan exists in a constant world of fairy dust and woodland nymphs (blow and hookers). As I struggle to get home to my modest dwelling far beyond the reaches of civilization due to the cost of living, Ryan comes home to hardwood floors and views of New York City. Yes, Ryan is a high powered, high lifestyle person.
It all culminated a few days ago when Ryan proudly proclaimed “haven’t had mcd’s iced coffee. its not expensive enough. i like to pay at least $2.50 for iced coffee.”. Everyone was astonished that he had become so brazen in his hatred for what the common man does. He was completely immersed in the rich lifestyle that there was no turning back for him.
But for the rest of us I present to you the latest in TMW’s long line of beverage reviews..

McDonald’s Iced Coffee.
McDonalds has joined the premium coffee world with their latest entry of iced coffee. Coming in 3 flavors, regular, vanilla, and hazelnut, they are offering a cheap alternative to Starbucks, and as PatBoyX discovered, the ultimate premium shop of coffee, Dunkin Dounuts. Being that PatBoyX had just reviewed Hazelnut flavored coffee I decided to go for the vanilla. Ordering it from the lone English speaker at the same McDonlads that screwed up my Spicy Chicken order I was worried that they’d screw up again. Luckily not only could the man understand me and communicate back, he was also able to fill my order with no problem.
$2.11 for something this sized seems like a pretty good deal, unfortunately most of that ended up being ice.

Take a look at that picture. What do you see in it? While Ryan only gets his coffee from high end eateries in New York City and enjoys the sights and sounds of the streets while sitting next to a large window as his premium import sports car sits housed in an exclusive beachfront town, I am forced to drink my lunch in an American sedan in the parking lot of a McDonalds, overlooking a dirty field and old women smoking in the cars next to me. Oh well, some of us are just not destined for fame and fortune.
The drink, at first it was really good, I was surprised at the flavor. The vanilla was not hidden and the coffee tasted good. Unfortunately that seemed to be the syrup that had sunk to the bottom and not mixed very well with the rest of the drink as subsequent tastes became blander and blander. I did mix up the coffee beforehand but it did not seem to matter. With the massive amount of ice in the cup the drink quickly became watered down. I hadn’t even finished half of it when the taste had become more like coffee water than iced vanilla coffee.
I’ll give it 2.5 cheeses. Maybe someone with a little more experience in iced coffee can comment on this if they give it a shot. Being that I hardly ever drink coffee of any sort anywhere I really have nothing to compare this review to.

Maybe one day Ryan will throw us little guys a bone and let us experience the sort of life he lives.

Anyone who has the recipe fr McDs ice coffee – esp. the Vanilla – please let me know. I watch them make it and experiment at home. They fill a clear 16 oz or so – plastic cup with square ice cubes – then pump a shot of whaet I believe is the vanilla in the bottom of the cup. Aguess would be maybe to use the bottled intense stuff (liquid creamer) and use about 1/3-1/2 cup?? Then they pump in what I believe is 1/2&1/2 or milk – about the same amount. The they go to the coffee dispensor -that I believe is filled with pre-chilled coffee – seems like pretty strong stuff too as it is still good even when the cubes melt – maybe double brewed or left to sit overnight ??? dunp it in and mix. I tried variations and came close. let me kjnow if you got better results

My wife had pretty much figured out the recipe to make McDonalds Iced Coffee. She put it on one of her blogs at http://www.cobbcommunity.org/blogs/whatscookingcobb/archive/2007/07/14/hooked-on-iced-coffee.aspx in case anyone else is interested.

I’ve visited Mcdonald’s web site and viewed the ingredients in the ice coffee and found out the 3 ingredients are:
coffee
light cream
vanilla syrup
You can purchase the vanilla syrup at starbucks for under $10 for a liter.

I love McD vanilla ice coffee. I use to be a Starbucks addict, but now love the McD’s one better, its bigger, cheaper and tastier. I am also trying to find the recipe so I don’t have to go there every morning. Even if its 25 degrees out, I still get the ice coffee!

Ohhh I love Mc domalds iced coffee. Today I order it W/O the syrup. I liked it a whole lot! I started my diet and this will be great! I didn’t really care for the sugar free vanilla though. I just used a bit of splenda today.

$10 for a liter of vanilla syrup is massively overpriced. You can get it for less than half that almost anywhere else. Or you could just get some vanilla extract at the 99 Cents/Dollar Tree store. That’s all it is… vanilla extract and a lot of sugar.
———————————
Vanilla Syrup
1 1/2 cups water
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons vanilla extract
In a large saucepan over medium-high heat, bring water, sugar and salt to a boil, stirring occasionally until sugar is dissolved. Boil until mixture becomes thick and syrupy, about three to five minutes. Remove from heat. Stir in vanilla extract and cool.
———————————
Vanilla extract has no carbohydrates or calories, so if you want to avoid the sugar and carbs/calories, just use a few drops of the vanilla extract by itself. Add your preferred artificial sweetener if desired. The only calories and carbs will be from the milk/creamer. (Coffee has no calories or carbs).
There’s a good review of the coffee here http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/588181/mcdonalds_vanilla_iced_coffee_tantalizing.html
and it references the McDonald’s nutrition index here http://www.mcdonalds.com/app_controller.nutrition.index1.html
which says that the 16 oz (small) vanilla iced coffee has 130 calories and 21 grams of carbohydrates, while the 16 oz iced coffee with sugarfree vanilla syrup is 60 calories and 8 carbs, so the extra 80 calories must be the milk or nondairy creamer or whatever. Their coffee creamer is listed as 20 calories per half ounce, but no carbs, so it’s probably not that. (40 calories per ounce is about twice what other nondairy coffee creamers have, btw. They are made of water, sugar, and corn syrup, so if you want to avoid sugar, beware, because this creamer is obviously loaded with it). Milk has 11 to 14 g carbs per cup, so maybe they’re using about 2 ounces of milk in the 16 ounce iced vanilla coffees.
Note that they never say the sugarfree version is actually sugar free, only that it uses sugarfree syrup, so they might be adding sugar to the coffee itself.
The large vanilla iced coffee has 270 calories/43 grams carbs, while the large sugarfree-syrup vanilla iced coffee has 120 calories/16 grams carbs. That’s about right for 8 ounces of milk, so they might be using 8 ounces of milk, in their 32 ounce iced sugar-free syrup vanilla coffees. I think. My head is starting to hurt. :)

I am addicted to the hazelnut flavor and have been drinking it almost daily for about 2 yrs….only have 2 Mickeys to choose from. There is no consistency to the end result…there is a recipe but most employees don’t follow it for one reason or another (according to the manager I spoke with yesterday). Talk about a retail manager with no customer service skills…excuse upon excuse and didn’t seem to take to my constructive criticism. Their syrup is the best. Tried brand at Walmart store…not good. Have even sent for hazelnut extract; still not the same when added to simple syrup.

Tried making the iced coffee tonight and mine was just as good as McD’s. I did the following:
3 ounces of vanilla creamer (Coffee mate brand from the refrig. section)
13 ounces of cold coffee.
Mixed and poured over a cup of ice…
Perfect!!! :)
